One of the examples was a company that was hiring teams instead of individuals – such an amazing idea! One of the most scary things when you start a new job is: will I fit in with the team? You hope HR have done a good job at hiring individuals that will fit in the culture of the organisation and work well together, but it’s not always that easy. I’ve been incredibly lucky at F6, where I have a team that, almost from day one, I can work seamlessly with. And the outcome is much better than if I was doing the work on my own. And that’s because we brainstorm, we bring different ideas to the table, we’re not afraid to think out loud, and sometimes, the silliest ideas evolve into powerful ones with input from the team. As the great Ogilvy used to say ‘The best ideas come as jokes. Make your thinking as funny as possible’. Once you find a team like that, it’s really hard to imagine work without them. And forming and managing teams that work so well together is also hard. So why not avoid the hard work and hire already formed teams? I think it’s such a good idea! And I also think you don’t need to be a start-up to implement these “crazy” methods. It’s not “adapting your workspace to millennials”, or “acquiring a start-up mentality”, it’s evolving with the times, searching for new ways to obtain better results, and more importantly, caring about your employees’ well being. ‘Cause happy employees make happy (and successful) companies 🙂.
